every man dies - not every man dies while clubbing! i'm spinning some dancepunk / electro / breaks at san diego sports club in hillcrest on friday 8/8. the tunes will be gritty, huge and groovy, as if a bunch of indie rockers decided that breakdancing was the future. actually, that happened last time. the venue could be described as ghetto-chic and extremely mellow, drinks are cheap, $5 to get in. come for the cheap liquor, stay for the apocalypse!

Who's coming to Earthdance this Saturday 9/15?

Event is noon to 6 pm in Balboa Park on the grass field at the corner of Park Ave. & President's Way. There will be three stages of bands and DJ's, a beer/ wine/ vodka garden, lots of cool arts & crafts vendors, vegan food vendors, live graffiti art, and much more. 8:39 Productions is hosting the "Underground Elements" stage which will feature DJ Blue amongst six other great SD DJ's.

Come out to dance, hear great music, bask in the sun, pray for peace, and have all-around good times with us! Stilters, hoopers, flaggers, etc. are encouraged to come out and play!

Earthdance needs your help!

8:39 Productions has been asked by Realivze Tribe to take a large role in organizing this year's Earthdance on September 15 in San Diego’s Balboa Park. For those who don't know, Earthdance is a worldwide event that takes place in support of humanitarian causes through the global language of music and dance, culminating in a synchronized prayer for peace (which included 360 events in 57 countries last year). Check out www.earthdance.org for more information on the organization.

This year's event will be a FREE event held in Balboa Park, but will be on a much larger scale than last year. There will be three stages featuring local, national, and international talent with bands as well as DJ's. There will also be artists, performers, and vendors of all kinds, as well as (permit pending) a beer garden. The event is being fully funded through sponsorship and we will be donating 100% of the proceeds to Surf Aid (www.surfaidinternational.org), Green Thrive, Balboa Park, and Earthdance International.

How can you help? We want to make this a fun event that truly represents the spirit of Earth Dance, and nobody has more fun in an earth-conscious way than Burners. We are inviting all hoopers, jugglers, stilt walkers, clowns, acrobats, flag spinners (sorry no fire) to come out and do your thing. We are calling all artists, designers, jewelers, and craftspeople to set up vendor booths, give demonstrations, or donate a piece to the cause (tax write-offs can be arranged). We also welcome installations from the Burn to be set up on-site so that they can be enjoyed one more time. Basically, we are open to any and all ideas - it can be as simple as just showing up and playing around, or we can try to work out a more coordinated performance that could be featured on one of the stages – but please make sure you contact us about bringing performance equipment of any kind as there will be security at the door for liability reasons.

If this sounds like something fun that you'd like to participate in, please give us a shout!

Ranking Joe is another of these artist that deserves the recognition of their talents and contribution to reggae music over the years. I am coming back to SD at the begining of September and am trying to find hotel names. I want to stay in OB, but am not finding any names online except for the one on the beach. Is that the only one? Just want to spread the word that Fareed Haque Group will be at Winston's on Saturday, 6/3/06. Here's what some of my friends are saying about the current tour:

"His group this tour is amazing. They are so talented, and have been producing some AMAZING music. Very percussive, w/ Salar, Zakir Hussains top student. And, Kala, an Indian Violin player who is super famous in India."

"Honestly, no one who went to this show would be disapointed, I saw my second night, and was so blowin away by some of the playing. So freakin groovy, too. Percussion and rythms are out of this world."

Street in Ocean Beach, CA. No, Dream Street isn't a strip club
although that *Would* be a pretty good name for one. Not that we'd
play at a strip club. Okay, we probably would if given the chance.

We're opening for Kuumba Dawa which is a great Afro Pop rhythm-driven
band. We start at 9:30 and go until about 11. Rumor has it that
there's going to be one heck of an R.V. party somewhere around the
corner from the venue complete with beers, shots, acoustic jams, and
R.V. Hats.

crappy OB business - Beach Communications

So, I hate to be a barer of bad news, but we've got some trash in OB it seems. Being a good Obecian, I shop locally & try to support as many of our local businesses as I can. I grew up here, so there's a certain sense of personal/community pride to it. Anyway, I digress.

You know that mobile phone store on Bacon - Beach Communications? It's right next to the pottery store... Don't go there - so freaking shady!

I'll give you a little background on the situation... I spent some money in there in the past, some fairly substantial purchases & I have also sent some business there. As far as business practices, I thought that they were a little lax (getting stuff done in there takes a long time), but whatever... it's OB & the owner seemed like a pretty standup guy.

So when I was in need of a temp phone this last week (my blackberry took a header) I stopped in there to see if they could hook me up. Robert (the owner) was really helpful. He hooked me up with a loaner, no deposit required & charged a reasonable $20 for a week. Right on!

Well, turns out - the phone he gave me was broken, he knew it was broken when he gave it to me & when the hinge broke the second day I had it - by simply opening the phone, he tried to charge me for it. I went in there as soon as it happened & the gal there (phone tech - nice girl) said "yeah, I knew that was going to happen - he shouldn't have given you that phone". She also said that he knew it was broken as well. wtf? And he's going to try and charge me $45 bucks? At least he got baligerent & offensive - bullying me & treated me as though I was the problem "you broke it! if it was defective, you should have brought it back! I don't even loan phones - I don't need these kinds of problems" yadda yadda yadda, the guy was a total jerk. Whatever that had to do with me, I'm not quite sure - but that certainly wasn't how you treat a customer. (Oh - which he also said I wasn't when I pointed that out... huh?)

So I ended up leaving the store with my SIM chip & no phone, 'cause the solution he finally came up with was to switch out the phone & charge me a "deposit" of - drum roll please... $45 bucks for an even older crappier rental. Uh-huh, I may be blonde - but please!

Needless to say - I won't be going there again & I would highly suggest that you avoid going there as well, we don't need to support shady businesses in OB. He was combative with me over a problem he created, essentially tried to rip me off for breaking the phone & not like $20 bucks is a big deal - but he got my money & I certainly didn't get a working phone for a week.... I'm just sayin...

Hey all –
Those of you who remained in town over the weekend might have noticed a
heavy handed police presence in OB Friday night. Karey told me and Sean
on
Saturday that all the bar managers on Newport recently attended a class
sponsored by SDPD; the purpose of the class was to put the bars on
notice
that the cops will be cracking down on the OB area bars: Increased foot
patrols on Newport and undercover cops inside the bars, foot patrols
and
increased checkpoints leading out of OB. The primary tactic being
utilized
is intimidation: Mike, who rolls sushi at Sapporo, was arrested as he
was
walking all of one block home after having a couple of afterwork bevies
at
the VFW; people who gathered outside of Winston’s after last call were
confronted by foot patrols shining flashlights in their faces and
ordering
them to leave immediately or face arrest. The woman who runs the
Winston’s
hot dog stand was told to shut down and go home. I personally observed
4-6
cops harassing two people waiting for a bus as I left the Newport
Ortega’s
shortly after 10pm.

OB reportedly is a testing ground for this new program: If it succeeds,
SDPD
will take the show up the road to South Mission and PB.

District 2 council representative Kevin Faulconer is hosting a
neighborhood
forum this Thursday night at the Masonic Temple on the corner of Sunset
Cliffs Blvd and Santa Cruz Avenue. This will be a good opportunity to
voice
opposition to this new policy.

In the meantime, be careful leaving the fort.

I made this messing around at Death Metal Brian's one late night/early morning. It was not intended to be a promo but I'm sick of hearing people bitch at me about a new mix so here take this and shut the hell up. Anyways it's nowhere near perfect as his setup is all jacked up (that buzz you may here is from a turntable with no ground wire, etc.), but I enjoyed it even after a few listens so I thought I'd share. I called the mix "8:30 a.m." because it reminds me of the set I played the morning after Brutus' birthday, definitely on the chiller side of what I play. So I'll shut up now and let you listen. Any feedback, good or bad, is greatly appreciated.

This f*cker randomly showed up at a houseparty in OB (San Diego) this past weekend, hung out with us, drank from the keg, watched a killer acoustic jam session, then proceeded to steal a backpack with $400 worth of band equipment in it... and then was stupid enough to post it on craigslist and try to sell it back to the folks he stole it from (without even realizing they were the same people from the party... dumbass...). Luckily they got most of their stuff back, but are still out a special $100 pedal. Apparently his name is Dave S. and his email addy is etown_dave@hotmail.com. Stupid SOB. Please harrass him as much as you want! Sorry I don't have any better pictures, but it's the guy in the red sweatshirt. And if you happen to know him or run into him, please give him a good hard kick in the nuts!

I got the cure for what ails ya! I'll be spinning some records up at Dream Street (on Bacon) Saturday, November 12. The party starts at 6 and I'll be spinning 7-8 (happy hour :-) so come through and say hello, grab a cheap drink, and shake ya ass if you feel so inclined. The party goes all night, but I think there's a $5 cover after 9 and it might go up after that.
